The University of New Brunswick in Saint John was established in September 1964 and the Students’ Representative Council was formed in the same year. Classes in first year Arts and Science were begun in Beaverbrook House and for the next five years classes were held in various buildings within the business area of the city. The first executive of the SRC in 1964-65 consisted of Allan Dodge, President, George Goss, Peter Trites and Pauline Fitch.

In the fall of 1969 UNBSJ moved to its new campus in Tucker Park. The SRC received its letters of patent in 1968 and after the move to the new campus the SRC had offices in Hazen Hall. The executive that year was Andrew McPherson, President, Elizabeth Whelly, Michael Bishop and Camilla Klohn.

When the Thomas J. Condon Student Centre was completed the SRC offices moved to its present location in Room 213. The first president to occupy the new office was Ken Murphy (1986-87) and the rest of the executive members were Ian McCoy, Tony Gogan and Mary Levesque.

Your student government has continued to lobby both levels of government on behalf of students for over a quarter of a century. It has also endeavoured to enhance student life at UNBSJ by contributing to the Residence Fund, Venture Campaign, athletic equipment, computer equipment, scholarships & bursaries and funding annual Orientation, Winter Carnival, Grad Class, the radio station, student newspaper, social events and numerous clubs and societies on campus.

This year’s team of President Melissa Colwell, V.P. Internal Leah Richardson, V.P. External Celia McDermott, V.P. Finance Thomas Jacob Beal, Social Director John Anthony Enman, and Promotions Director Sunny Upadhyay, have been working all summer to prepare for another great year at UNBSJ and encourage all students to get involved and take pride in their school.

We are a union of some 3000 students that works to defend and advance the political, social, cultural and academic interests of the students of UNBSJ. The SRC is made up of students who devote some time to making a difference.
